Moldova’s economy is getting smaller in people but larger in euros. Between 2019 and 2024, the country lost about 10% of its population, while GDP in euro terms rose strongly and GDP per capita nearly doubled, from €3,935 to €7,004. Average wages also increased from €368 to €727 per month, although they still remain far below Romania’s level. Public debt stood at 37.8% of GDP in 2024, which is relatively low by European standards and gives the government more room to support investment than many peers. Still, the headline numbers should be read carefully: part of the per-capita growth reflects inflation and a smaller population base, not only real economic expansion. Over the same period, cumulative real GDP growth was modest.

All data excludes Transnistria and Bender. GDP by sector is gross output at current prices, not value added. Wages converted to EUR using the implied annual average MDL/EUR rate derived from NBS GDP data. The 2024 GDP figure is preliminary.
